International Day of Older Persons Message

Dear Colleagues-

Since June of this year we’ve regularly been sharing IPA’s position on global awareness days around our focus on mental healthcare of older persons. This 1 October 2020, we bring the spotlight to International Day of Older Persons.

First recognized by the United Nations (UN) 30 years ago, this important day offers a chance to emphasize the valuable role older adults play in our societies.  You can learn more about the UN,  International Day of Older Persons and the World Health Organization (WHO) Decade of Health Aging 2020-2030 initiative in this virtual presentation.

COVID-19 has brought a spotlight to ageism, aging-related diseases, health inequities and even elder abuse. However, highlighting (past and continuing) contributions of older persons is also important. By recognizing and celebrating International Day of Older Persons, we have a platform on which to promote a society hospitable to and supportive of people of all ages.

Please share this message and join me in supporting healthy aging initiatives and policies.

William Reichman, MD
IPA President
