Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception

Reception at the City Hall
Date: Wednesday, 21 September
Time: 19.30-21.30
Open for all registered delegates, exhibitors and guests. Please indicate your participation on the online registration form. The reception will take place by courtesy of the city of Stockholm at Stockholm City Hall, the venue for the Nobel Prize banquet. A buffet dinner will be served followed by a guided tour of the building.

IPA and the Local Organising Committee would like to invite you to the IPA 2005 Congress Party taking place on Friday evening, 23 September at the unique venue of Junibacken.

Junibacken (Junedale) is a magical world of children’s stories by Sweden’s famous author Astrid Lindgren, it is a building full of tales and mischief located on the beautifully island of Djurgården. Climb aboard the Story Train for a ride through Astrid Lindgren’s enchanting world. A buffet dinner will be served in the main hall of Junibacken offering an astonishing view of Stockholm. Rx for Dementia: Touch, music, dignity - Photo Exhibit
While attending IPA’s 12th Congress in Stockholm, please take time and visit the photography display by Cathy Greenblat, Professor Emerita of Sociology, Rutgers University, United States. These are photographs from a California residential facility for people with dementia are coupled in this exhibit with photographs from several “group homes” for the dependent elderly in Japan.

City Tour and Old Town Walkabout

You will discover that Stockholm is built on islands connected by numerous bridges, all of which have their own specific characteristics. The tour will take you to the most interesting parts of the city including the City Centre, The Old Town Gamla Stan, and Fjällgatan overlooking the Baltic and situated on the largest of the 14 islands. We will pass by the City Hall of Stockholm, known for its beautiful banquet halls. The Nobel Festivities are held here yearly. On the bus tour you will not only learn about Stockholm’s history and culture but you will also get information about shopping, restaurants and current events etc. The island Gamla Stan (the Old Town) is the original heart of the ancient city of Stockholm and is subsequently the city’s oldest and most historical area. Amazingly, the island has escaped the winds of change and thus most of its medieval layout and character remained intact. A wander through the narrow, cobbled streets, breathing in the historical atmosphere and spirit of this particularly fascinating Stockholm island, will give you a clear notion of what life must have been like centuries ago. Throughout the walk, your guide will also relate old stories and legends of Gamla Stan whilst showing you the charming coffee shops, built cleverly into the old cellar-vaults, and the antique shops and art galleries of today. 

Under the Bridges of Stockholm

To experience the most of Stockholm from the water, you should choose this trip that passes under 15 bridges and through two locks. The captain and guide conduct a tour on both the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. You will see many of the well-known buildings from the water including the Royal Palace and the Vasa Ship Museum 

Drottningholm by Bus
Date: Friday, 23 September

Price: SEK 900 (Including: bus transfer from the Congress venue and back, lunch and entrance fee)

Visit the Drottningholm Palace situated on the shore of Lake Mälaren. This beautiful palace built in the 17th century is today the residence of the Royal Family. On the tour you will see unique interiors from the last centuries as well as the surrounding park. At Drottningholm is also the Drottningholm Theatre, which is the oldest theatre in the world preserved in its original state and with original machinery still in use. You will have a special guided tour inside this unique theatre. The Drottningholm area is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.
