Dr. Helen Fung-kum Chiu, is Professor of Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Chiu is currently President of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists, Immediate Past President of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists, as well as Vice President of the Hong Kong Psychogeriatric Association. Professor Chiu sits on the Editorial Board of a number of journals. She is also Head of The Psychogeriatric Unit and the Director of the Dementia Research Unit at Department of Psychiatry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Chiu graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1980 and joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a lecturer in 1987. She was trained in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Cambridge, UK, (1985-1986), and subsequently trained in psychogeriatrics under Professor Tom Arie in Nottingham, UK. Dr. Chiu is the first full-time psychogeriatrician in Hong Kong and, in 1991, established the first comprehensive psychogeriatric service there. She has been very active in developing and promoting psychogeriatric services and the subspecialty of psychogeriatrics in Hong Kong. Dr. Chiu’s major research interests are in the field of dementia and Elderly suicide. She was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 1999 for her work and services on dementia care.
